Last night, I taught my first class of Mass Communication, and from my perspective, it went well. Trying something “new” is never easy, and I think that I convinced most of them to take this journey with me.
I have just been thinking lately that it is really important to move forward with Sociology – to take it into the 21st Century. To abandon things that don’t work and to try something different. I suppose that I am doing “different” in the context of something very structured and rigid (as in, a University, a University class room, lecturing etc. etc. etc.).
Yet last night, I felt an inspiration like I haven’t in a long time. After the horrible cynicism I witnessed at the UofC only days prior, I felt like I had to lay it all out there – that if you are a mindless cynic, that possibly this class would not be for you. That if you are unwilling to think outside the box a little, that this wouldn’t be the class for you.
I lectured until I lost my voice.
Yet, I continued on like this because I could see the ligthbulbs going off. This experience of seeing people get what you are saying is a very powerful drug. I want more of it. I am doing the right thing.
Here are some of the blogs that have started off well:

You rule at commenting on your students blogs! just wait until i’m in your class…i’ll blow your mind.
Can I come sit in on one of your classes? I promise I’ll behave.
Prof Pauly,
FYI – the student with the “My Wish” blog site ROCKS. I was drawn to her site due to the title. Do you realize her site is named after the hit single “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts (they are coming to Cowtown by the way). How am I to know that this presumption is not a mistake? This student posted a picture of Dierks Bentley to their site (they’ve clearly got good taste). Go Dierks! Dierks is coming to Calgary this weekend… going to the concert tomorrow night with some girlfriends – the Cadillac 3-some! Giddy up… Congrats! Obviously your lessons went well. Your students seem very excited about your upcoming sociological insights…
I’m really excited for your class. It’s so different from a typical university course. Thanks for the posts on my blog. It will be really interesting when everyone gets their blog up and running.
